GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:    

We are actively seeking a motivated individual with a strong understanding of actuarial science and actuarial software experience to join the Actuarial team. This incumbent will have the opportunity to assist in one of various roles such as financial planning & analysis, assumption development, model management, valuation or cash flow projections within the Corporate Actuarial Team. 

**Position is based in Des Moines, IA with an on-site working schedule**

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:   

This opportunity will have exposures to the following comprehensive spectrum of career opportunities through the rotations in the Actuarial Student Program:

  • Builds, maintains, and runs actuarial models using actuarial tools (Mg-ALFA, RStudio or other); writes software code, enters inputs/assumptions, tests calculations, evaluates impacts and presents valuation, risk, financial reporting, pricing, product and/or other actuarial findings.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting and impact analysis on balance sheet and income statement across multiple financial reporting regimes (U.S. GAAP, STAT, Tax and outside U.S. jurisdictions such as Bermuda) for Company’s future operations and various capital structure transactions;
  • Contributes to the development of policyholder behavior actuarial assumptions from the experience study results utilizing advanced predictive modeling techniques;
  • Assists with timely and accurate reporting, validation and analysis of GAAP and Stat liabilities, economic reserve, ALM, embedded value, or free cash flows;
  • Assists with model update changes due to model change requests including development, testing, or review according to model governance policy;
  • Collaborates with Corporate Actuarial Team (financial reporting, model and data, cash profitability, FP&A and assumptions) and other teams (e.g., Investment, ROA, Product and Pricing) to share results and influence/support optimized business strategy development.
  • Supports the Actuarial Data Team in understanding the desired data and identifying solutions for MG-ALFA Modeling;
  • Assists in building and enhancing internal controls;
  • Assists in completing reporting deliverables on a monthly or a quarterly cycle;
  • Supports applicable internal or external audit requests, such as model / assumptions / reporting internal controls;
  • Performs actuarial work on a range of projects as well as special projects/other duties as assigned;
  • Completes actuarial career development work as assigned;
  • Performs other related work as assigned. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

None required for this position. 

  • Bachelor’s degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics or related field of study, or equivalent combination of education/and experience;
  • At least two actuarial exams completed;
  • Experience working with Microsoft Excel and Word required;
  • Experience using SQL and relational database, and actuarial platform (such as MG-ALFA) preferred;
  • Experience working with annuity products preferred.
  • Some actuarial working experience that may include an actuarial internship in the life and annuity industry preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:    

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents from regulatory agencies, and other members of the business community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to the Actuarial management team. 
  • Programing experience is highly desirable using VBA, SQL, R or some other language and the desire to apply these programming principles.
  • Modeling of annuity products within MG-ALFA and using tools in Excel, SQL and R to manage model input and output.
  • Database inspection in MS SQL server for data collection and validation.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced mathematical concepts and theory.
  • Intermediate level experience with MS Excel including pivot tables, VLookup, Indirect, charts, and macros.
  • Exposure to MS Teams, Word, Outlook and other day-to-day business applications.

  • Actively pursuing successful completion of actuarial examinations.
