Sam began their career as an RF Engineer at Trott Communications, where they designed and analyzed cellular phone, paging, and land mobile systems. Sam then worked as an RF/Spectrum Engineer at PageNet, where they were responsible for all technical spectrum issues and performed design, analysis, licensing, and engineering of paging systems.
Wetsel continued their career at Nortel, Inc., where they served as a Senior RF Engineer. Sam was part of the team that designed and implemented a 1900 MHz CDMA wireless system for Sprint PCS. Their responsibilities included site selection, acquisition, and evaluation, as well as propagation analysis and model tuning for the RF design of the CDMA system.
Sam then joined NextWave Wireless as a Microwave Relocation Manager, where they analyzed and implemented a 2 GHz microwave incumbent relocation strategy for a PCS 1900 MHz CDMA system. Sam also completed RF engineering work in the design and implementation of the wireless system, including site selection and engineering evaluation of potential cell site locations.
Wetsel moved on to Sprint Nextel, where they held multiple roles, including Senior Manager and Director of Spectrum Engineering. In these positions, they were responsible for managing and analyzing all spectrum issues at the corporate level. Sam led the engineering and technical direction of the Spectrum Strategy Group, oversaw spectrum acquisition, network channel availability, market spectrum engineering, and strategic border and rebanding agreements. Sam also managed the Spectrum Engineering team.
After Sprint Nextel, Wetsel worked at ICO Global Communications as the Director of Spectrum Engineering. Their responsibilities included managing and analyzing strategic spectrum issues for the deployment of video and data services on terrestrial cell sites and geosynchronous satellites. Sam also conducted studies, analysis, and mapping of 2 GHz microwave clearing, and developed software using GIS tools for geospatial RF drive test data analysis and display.
