Robert Dewhurst

Head of Assay Development at Avicena Systems

Robert Dewhurst has extensive work experience in various scientific roles. Robert started their career as a Placement Student at AstraZeneca in 1999. Robert then worked as a Staff Research Associate at the University of California, San Diego, where their research on archaeal transcriptional regulation was published in PNAS.

In 2008, Robert joined the Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre as a Research Scientist. After a few months, they moved to the Telethon Kids Institute as a Researcher in their Drug Discovery Unit. In 2012, Phylogica Limited, where Robert worked, separated from Telethon Kids and rebranded as PYC Therapeutics. Robert continued working there as a Research Scientist and later as a Senior Scientist. Robert played a crucial role in constructing and optimizing peptide libraries using next-generation sequencing and identifying pharmacodynamic markers for oncology drug candidates.

In 2019, Robert joined PYC Therapeutics as a Senior Scientist. Robert managed the company's transcriptomics capability, coordinated RNA-based assays for pre-clinical in vivo studies, and implemented analysis protocols for quantifying confocal image data.

In 2020, Robert joined Perron Institute for Neurological and Translational Science as a Senior Scientist. Robert then transitioned to Avicena Systems, where they currently hold the role of Head of Assay Development.

Throughout their career, Robert has demonstrated a strong foundation in scientific research, data analysis, and coordination of complex assays.

Robert Dewhurst received their Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry with Molecular Biology from the University of Leeds, which they attended from 1997 to 2001. Following this, they pursued their Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Masters by Research in the Life Sciences: Developmental biology and Biomedical Research at The University of Edinburgh, graduating in 2003. Subsequently, they obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Developmental Biology and Stem Cells from The University of Edinburgh, completing their studies in 2007.
