Karim Azer

VP, Head of Platform & Discovery at Axcella

Karim Azer has extensive work experience in the field of quantitative systems pharmacology, translational informatics, and systems biology. Karim is currently the VP, Head of Platform & Discovery at Axcella since May 2022. Prior to this, they were the VP, Head of Systems Biology & Discovery at Axcella from May 2021 to May 2022.

Before joining Axcella, Karim held various roles at prominent organizations. Karim was the Head of Systems Biology & Systems Pharmacology at the Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute from June 2018 to May 2021. In this role, they focused on leveraging bioinformatics, systems biology, and computational modeling approaches to address translational medicine needs in areas such as tuberculosis, malaria, and maternal neonatal health.

Karim also worked at Sanofi as the Sr. Director and Head of Quantitative Systems Pharmacology, Translational Informatics from 2016 to 2018, and as the Sr. Director and Systems Pharmacology U.S. Head in the Interdisciplinary Pharmacometrics Program from 2014 to 2018.

Furthermore, they served as a Principal Scientist - Director of Quantitative Pharmacology and Pharmacometrics at Merck for a significant period from 1997 to 2014.

Additionally, Karim was a Member of the Industrial Advisory Board at Northeastern University starting from April 2019, and a Member of the Scientific Advisory Board at COSBI since April 2016.
