Susan E. Juroe

Co-Founder & General Counsel at Balfour Senior Care

Susan E. Juroe is co-owner and general counsel of Balfour Senior Living. Since 1999, she has played an essential role in Balfour’s growth, branding, and development forming the company’s strategic vision, arranging its financing, and developing the Balfour style, as expressed both in the architecture of its communities and their interior spaces. Prior to joining Balfour, Juroe was a partner at Holland and Knight, LLP, where she had a national practice in real estate finance and development.

Juroe’s design vision has helped propel Balfour to its leading position in the world of senior housing by targeting the discerning, well-traveled and affluent senior. The Balfour “look” is fun, sophisticated, stylish, colorful, and respectful of the history and the architecture of the community it is joining. Architectural themes include a Colorado ski-lodge motif; “Modern Farmhouse” and “Lavender Farm” inspired buildings for communities with rich farming heritages; and an equestrian style barn project in an affluent suburb of Denver previously home to horse breeding and fox-hunting. Balfour’s flagship urban mid-rise in Denver’s Riverfront Park is a Robert A.M. Stern designed homage to doorman buildings of great American cities complete with a glass canopy, awnings and oversized Palladian windows.

Juroe built Balfour’s in-house development capabilities by recruiting a group of like-minded professionals enthusiastic about developing Balfour’s platform. The team has drafted Balfour Development Brand Standards to support Balfour’s growth and has developed industry alliances with manufacturers in the lighting, furniture, wallcoverings, paint, and carpet industries to produce products not available in the health care industry. Juroe has curated an extensive proprietary digital art library for Balfour communities and retained an art consultant to tag the art throughout the communities with descriptions of their provenance and cultural importance.

Earlier in her career Ms. Juroe served on the board of multiple housing finance magazines and trade associations and authored several pieces on affordable housing. She served in the Reagan Administration as Special Assistant to the Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and as Special Assistant to the Chairman of the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board. She graduated with a B.A. in Literature from the American University and a J.D. from the Columbus School of Law, The Catholic University. She is an active member of the Washington, D.C. and Colorado Bar Associations.
