Paul Van Gardingen has a diverse work experience in academia and consultancy. Paul served as the Pro Vice Chancellor/Vice President for Global Engagement at Bangor University starting in February 2023. Prior to that, they were a Professor of International Development at the University of Dundee, where they also worked as a Special Advisor to the Principal and Vice Chancellor. In this role, they supported the development of a strategic partnership between the university and partners in Malawi, focusing on education, research, and climate change. Paul also led collaborations with six public universities in Malawi to fulfill the social purpose commitments outlined in the Blantyre Declaration.
Before joining the University of Dundee, Paul worked as an Independent Researcher and Consultant in a private consultancy from February 2020. Prior to that, they held various academic positions at the University of Leicester, including Professor of International Development (Honorary), Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor for Global Engagement, Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor for International and Development Research, and Visiting Professor of International Development.
Paul started their academic career at the University of Edinburgh, where they served as a Professor of International Development and previously worked as a Senior Lecturer. Additionally, Paul Van Gardingen also has experience as the Director of the Ecosystem Services for Poverty Alleviation Programme.
Paul Van Gardingen earned a PhD in Plant Physiology from the University of Canterbury, completing their studies between 1980 and 1986.
