Matthew Haines has a diverse work experience. In 2009 they worked as a Nanomaterials Research Assistant at the University of Waterloo. In 2010 they were an Optical Engineering Intern at Christie Digital Systems. In 2011 they were a Chemical Process Engineer at Kingston Process Metallurgy Inc. In 2012 they worked as a Materials Research Engineer at the Canada Border Services Agency. In 2013 they were a Nanophotonics Research Engineer at the Technical University of Denmark, where they developed an optimized fabrication workflow for InP Bragg gratings. In 2014 they were a Microfabrication Engineer at the University of Waterloo. From 2016 to 2019 they worked as an Optical Systems Engineer at North. Currently, they are an Optical Engineer at Baraja.

Matthew Haines obtained their Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Nanotechnology from the University of Waterloo between 2009 and 2014. Matthew then went on to pursue a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Nanotechnology from DTU - Technical University of Denmark between 2012 and 2013. Finally, they completed their Master's Degree in Photonics Engineering from McGill University between 2014 and 2016.
