Job description

Barrington Stage Company, an award-winning professional theatre company located in the heart of the Berkshires (MA), is seeking a Custodian with strong time management and organizational skills, knowledge of custodial and building maintenance in a theatrical setting, attention to detail, self-direction, and a preferred background in construction trades to join our Production and Operations team in Pittsfield, MA.  This position is a part-time, year-round position, and starts immediately.

Responsibilities:

  • Clean and sanitize restrooms/bathrooms using established practices and procedures.
  • Clean, dust, sweep, mop, or vacuum theater floors and seating areas; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; handle recycling materials; replace light bulbs; refill restroom dispensers.
  • Strip, clean, buff and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors, vacuum, and shampoo carpets.
  • Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools such as buffers, high-pressure washers, vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc.
  • Use ladders when required in work assignments.
  • Lock and unlock assigned buildings: secure buildings when facilities are not in use check for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants, and turn off lights.
  • Mow and trim lawns and shrubbery, using mowers and hand and power trimmers, and clear debris from the grounds.
  • Perform cleaning and related activities such as removing snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs in areas within sixteen feet of buildings using hand-operated tools or small power equipment.
  • Assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc, including moving furniture, equipment, supplies, and tools as needed.
  • Wash accessible interior and exterior windows. Clean blinds. Launder cleaning rags and dust mops.
  • Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
  • Assist with inventory control, and advise the ordering of supplies and equipment for cleaning & maintenance duties.
  • Safely operate all vehicles and other job-related equipment.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Skills:

  • Attend to emergencies when necessary.

  • Ability to respond to changing circumstances quickly and with a positive attitude

  • Motivated, self-starter able to work both independently and collaboratively

  • Driver’s License required; personal vehicle recommended.

  • Must be able to work safely in an environment containing caustic chemicals, cleaning materials, dust, and noise.

  • Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting heavy items (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing, or walking.

This position reports to the Director of Production and Operations and requires working nights and weekends when the theatre is in production.
