James G. Burns

James G. Burns, PhD has a diverse and extensive work experience in the medical and research fields. James G. started their career as a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in 2007. Following this, they worked as a Research Fellow at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research from 2009 to 2011. In 2012, they joined the University of Toronto as a Senior Research Associate.

James then transitioned into the pharmaceutical industry, joining Shire in 2012. James G. held various roles at Shire, including Senior Medical Science Liaison - Neuroscience from 2012 to 2016, Senior Medical Science Liaison II - Neuroscience from 2016 to 2017, Medical Advisor - Ophthalmics from 2017 to 2018, and Associate Director, Medical Affairs - Ophthalmics from 2018 to 2018.

In 2019, James moved to Takeda as an Associate Director, Medical Affairs - Ophthalmics for a brief period of six months. The same year, they also joined Novartis as Associate Director, Clinical Development - Ophthalmology and Gene Therapy, a role they held until 2021. James then became the Associate Medical Director - Ophthalmology at Novartis from 2021 to 2022.

Most recently, James worked at Emergent BioSolutions as the Director, Global Medical Affairs, Canada from 2022 to 2023. James G. is currently serving as the Director, Medical Affairs, Canada at Bavarian Nordic since May 2023.

Throughout their career, James has gained expertise in various areas, including ophthalmology, clinical development, gene therapy, and medical affairs.

James G. Burns, PhD has a strong educational background in behavioral neuroscience, wildlife biology, and biology. James G. holds a PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience from the University of Toronto, an MSc in Wildlife Biology from Simon Fraser University, and a BSc in Biology from the University of Calgary. In addition to their academic qualifications, they have also obtained a certification as a Project Management Professional from the Project Management Institute in March 2012.
