Chief Communications Officer at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences

Steven Profaizer is the current Chief Communications Officer at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. Steven has held this position since August 2016. Prior to this, they served as the Director of Communications at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute from June 2012 to May 2015. In this role, they were responsible for designing and implementing comprehensive strategies to communicate the importance and value of research, build a community of support for the organization, and increase funding.

Profalizer has also worked with topic experts to address complex issues with a wide variety of internal and external audiences, including funding institutions, legislators, donors, educators, researchers, and regulators. Steven has also led the development of an advanced, Drupal-based corporate website that featured completely reimagined information architecture, integration of social media, and new interactive elements. Additionally, they have managed social media strategy and day-to-day execution, provided planning and communications support for events, such as a monthly science lecture series, written press releases, pitched stories, and strategically built relationships with key journalists to secure coverage in media outlets such as the New York Times, Boston Globe, NPR, and Associated Press.

In addition to their communications roles, Steven Profalizer has also assumed management of graphic design department, increasing both quality and efficiency. Steven has earned the required trust and reputation to lead diverse teams of researchers and educators.

They work with John Burns - Senior Research Scientist, David Whitt - Chief Financial Officer, and Nichole Price - Senior Research Scientist, Center for Seafood Solutions Director Benthic Marine Ecologist. Steven Profaizer reports to Deborah Bronk, President & CEO.
