Dr Roddy MacDonald

Dr Roddy Macdonald has an extensive work experience in the field of sport and exercise medicine. Dr Roddy is currently serving as the Chief Medical Officer at Birmingham City FC since September 2021. Prior to this, they worked as a General Practitioner-Partner at Benbecula Medical Practice / Uist and Barra Hospital from July 2019 to September 2021.

Before joining Benbecula, Dr Macdonald worked as a GP Locum with the NHS from December 2017 to June 2019. Dr Roddy also served as the Chief Medical Officer at Al Ain F.C. in the United Arab Emirates from August 2015 to June 2016.

Dr Macdonald's career in sport and exercise medicine began with their role as the Head of Sport and Exercise Medicine at Newcastle United Football Club from July 1998 to July 1999. Dr Roddy then moved to Celtic Football Club, where they held the same position for seven successful seasons, working under various managers and gaining experience in European football competitions.

After their tenure at Celtic, Dr Macdonald joined Aston Villa Football Club as the Head of Sport and Exercise Medicine from July 2007 to June 2010. During their time at Aston Villa, they implemented a sports science support program and contributed to the team's success in the league.

Following their tenure at Aston Villa, they returned to Celtic Football Club as the Head of Sport and Exercise Medicine from July 2010 to June 2012. During this period, they managed a comprehensive sports medicine department under budgetary constraints.

In their most recent previous role, Dr Macdonald served as the Head of Sport and Exercise Medicine at Aston Villa Football Club from July 2012 to July 2015, where they led and coordinated all sports medicine and exercise science staff.

Dr. Roddy Macdonald has an extensive education history. In 1984, they began their studies at The University of Glasgow, where they obtained their Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) in 1989, specializing in the field of medicine. Later, in 1993, they completed the Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP) at Glasgow. Following this, they pursued a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene at the University of Liverpool, which they completed in 1994. In 1996, Dr. Macdonald returned to The University of Glasgow to undertake a Master of Science degree in Sport and Exercise Medicine, which they completed in 2000. Finally, in 2008, they attained the Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (FFSEM) from Glasgow.
