Preconstruction Engineer

Summary of Position: The Preconstruction Engineer is responsible for working with the Preconstruction team and project teams to ensure the successful execution of the preconstruction stage of the projects assigned to them. As is generally expected of all Blach employees, the Preconstruction Engineer will work under the guidance of Blach’s Core Values, provide excellent customer service to all parties involved in the successful execution of Company projects, and abide by Company safety requirements.

Responsibilities:                      

  • Assist in developing estimates by performing quantity take-offs, evaluating drawings, specifications, and related documents

  • Perform complete conceptual estimates on small projects

  • Develop a deep understanding of construction means and methods, sequences, and techniques

  • Develop a strong knowledge and awareness of the factors that affect construction costs

  • Prepare project estimate variance reports with narratives

  • Take part in value engineering studies

  • Actively participate in the internal estimate review process

  • Assist with final assembly of estimate for presentation to Owner

  • Prepare Instructions to Bidders (ITB’s) and Budget Documents during the preconstruction phase

  • Perform scope of work reviews, assist in bid reviews, and ensure scope of work matches the quote

  • Attend job walks

  • Manage subcontractor communication

  • Build strong relationships in the subcontractor community

  • Special projects, including standardization of preconstruction’s process and procedures

  • Participate in project meetings

  • Keep current with latest estimating techniques and technology, including: WinEST, Construct Connect, Join.Build, Excel, Building Connected, Bluebeam

Skills/Qualifications:            

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Civil Engineering, Architecture or Construction Management
  • Three years of construction industry experience
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Strong math and analytical skills; attention to detail
  • Commitment to continuing education and industry involvement
  • Organized, efficient, able to multi-task effectively, hardworking, dedicated, able to thrive in a deadline-driven, fast-paced environment
  • Solid computer skills are required in Excel and MS Word; experience with estimating software is preferred

Position Status: Full-time, regular business hours, exempt
