Technical Artist
Location: Glasgow in studio/Hybrid
Role Type: 1 Year Contract
As a Technical Artist, you will be at the core of ensuring that our games run smoothly while looking fantastic. You’ll develop tools, workflows, and optimizations that empower our art teams and elevate the quality of our games. Your expertise will ensure that assets are performant across all platforms while retaining visual fidelity. This role is ideal for someone passionate about problem-solving and maximizing the potential of both technology and artistry in game development.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with the art and programming teams to develop and maintain tools, pipelines, and workflows that streamline the production process.
Optimize assets for performance across multiple platforms, including PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to asset implementation, performance, and rendering.
Act as a technical liaison between artists and developers to ensure seamless integration of assets into the game engine.
Support the creation and optimization of shaders, materials, and visual effects to meet artistic and technical goals.
Provide guidance on best practices for asset creation to ensure efficiency and maintain platform performance standards.
Conduct performance profiling and identify bottlenecks, offering solutions to improve frame rates and load times.
Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies to ensure the studio remains at the forefront of game development.
Qualifications
3+ years of experience as a Technical Artist in the games industry, with at least one shipped title on console or PC.
Proficiency in industry-standard tools such as Maya, Blender, Substance Suite, and Unity game engine (Unreal as a bonus).
Strong knowledge of optimization techniques for 3D models, textures, shaders, and lighting across console and PC platforms.
Experience developing tools and scripts (e.g., Python, MEL, C#, or similar) to support art pipelines.
Expertise in performance profiling and optimization, including GPU/CPU performance analysis.
Strong understanding of PBR workflows, rendering pipelines, and shader development.
Ability to troubleshoot complex issues and provide actionable solutions to both artists and programmers.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Nice-to-Have
Experience with cross-platform development, particularly on Nintendo Switch.
Familiarity with procedural generation tools like Houdini or Substance Designer.
Knowledge of real-time lighting and visual effects optimization.
Experience with photogrammetry workflows or similar advanced techniques.
