Troup's previous roles include Vice President R&D Global Strategy at Nestle Nutrition/Novartis Medical Nutrition from May 2007 to January 2008, as well as various leadership positions at Novartis Medical Nutrition from January 1999 to May 2007, including Senior Vice President & Head Global R&D and Global Head R&D. In these roles, they led global R&D teams, developed innovation acceleration teams, and was responsible for product development, clinical research, regulatory affairs, and more.

John P. began their educational journey at Florida State University from 1974 to 1978, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Biology. Following this, they pursued further studies at Ball State University from 1978 to 1980, earning a Master of Science (MS) degree specializing in Bionergetics and Exercise Physiology. Continuing their academic pursuits, Troup enrolled at Marquette University from 1980 to 1985, dedicating himself to a Ph.D. program focused on Human Metabolism and Bioenergetics.

Years later, Troup embarked on a new phase of their education at Harvard Business School from 1999 to 2001. Here, they participated in the Executive MBA program under the Novartis Corporate Program ('Top 90' Program), delving into studies related to Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services.
