Product Engineer / Product Designer (3D Modeling)

About the Role:  

The Product Engineer at BoxPower will work with the product development team, creating BoxPower’s innovative turnkey Microgrid product. The Product Engineer will be responsible for creating detailed 3D models of our existing/future products, prototypes, and concepts. This work will play a crucial role in bringing our innovative ideas to life and ensuring the successful development and launch of new products. 

This role will also work closely with project engineering, executing multiple islandable microgrid projects from cradle to grave, including fully off-grid systems. Project sizes range from 100kW to 10MW. The Product Engineer will aid with various facets of mechanical engineering design during the project execution phase. This role will also coordinate project execution with iterative product design, updating and improving product designs based on project impacts. 

This role reports to the Microgrid Engineer – Alex Killam. This role has no direct reports. The salary range for this role is $85k-110k depending on experience and extended responsibilities. This role can be performed remotely, hybrid, at BoxPower HQ in Grass Valley, CA. Typically up to two weeks of travel to sites required per quarter. Potentially more travel is required based on product/project needs. Remote employees are required to visit Grass Valley HQ at least once a quarter.   

Responsibilities:   

  • Utilize CAD software (SolidWorks or Revit) to create accurate and detailed 3D models of existing BoxPower products.
  • Utilize CAD software (SolidWorks or Revit) to create accurate and detailed 3D models of new products, parts, and components.
  • Collaborate closely with product designers and engineers to translate design concepts and specifications into 3D models.
  • Iterate on designs based on feedback from cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Conduct thorough reviews of 3D models to identify and address any design flaws or issues.
  • Assist in the creation of physical prototypes and mock-ups for testing and evaluation to ensure product quality and compliance with industry standards.
  • Support the product development process from concept to production, ensuring designs meet quality and performance standards.
  • Bill of Materials (BOM) management for product components and assemblies.
  • Complete mechanical engineering tasks for both products and projects such as performing HVAC load calculations; sizing equipment, duct work, and piping.
  • Stay up to date on industry trends, advancements in 3D modeling software, and best practices for product development.

Skills and Qualifications:  

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering. MS in Mechanical Engineering is a plus.

  • Must be proficient in 3D CAD software, such as SolidWorks or Revit (3+ years is a plus).

  • Strong understanding of engineering principles and manufacturing processes.

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to create accurate and precise 3D models.

  • Proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) standards and practices.

  • Understanding of IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, UL codes.

  • Ability to specify, identify, and approve equipment.

  • Ability to effectively multi-task and manage numerous projects/tasks simultaneously, frequently within an aggressive and compressed schedule.

  • Ability to perform data analysis in Microsoft Excel and other platforms.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

  • Proactiveness, team player and willingness to teach and learn from others.

Optional Skills and Qualifications:  

  • Engineer in Training or Professional Engineer License is a plus.

  • Proficiency in Deflagration/Active Ventilation design is a plus.

  • Proficiency in Generator(s) System Design is a plus.

  • Experience with designing to UL/NEMA standards for certification is a plus.

  • Experience with Manufacturing/Production/Shop Drawings is a plus.

  • Experience with Automation Tools is a plus.

  • Experience with Testing and Commissioning is a plus.

  • Experience with Mechatronics is a plus.

  • Experience with Human Machine Interfaces and Ignition is a plus.

  • Experience designing and executing microgrid is a plus. Microgrid includes solar PV, Generators, BESS, PV.

  • Familiarity with using pertinent codes and standards for Microgrid and BESS projects is a plus. This may include NEC / CEC, IFC / CFC, NFPA, etc. Ability to review new codes/standards and provide an interpretation.
