Jan-Willem van Klinken, MD PhD MS FACN has over 28 years of experience in the field of nutrition and medical affairs. Currently, they serve as a Member of the Board of Trustees for the ASN Foundation at the American Society for Nutrition. Jan-Willem is also a member of the ILSI North America Scientific Advisory Board at ILSI Global. Previously, they held the position of Senior Vice President of Medical, Scientific & Regulatory Affairs at Brightseed, where they led the application of artificial intelligence for bioactives/nutritional ingredients to support health.
Prior to Brightseed, Dr. van Klinken worked at GSK, where they held various roles including Country Medical Director USA and Senior Director of Medical Affairs for North America. Jan-Willem was responsible for developing medical/clinical innovation strategies for nutrition portfolio, multi-vitamin supplements/foods/beverages, OTC, and new ventures. Jan-Willem also served as the Chair Sustaining Partners and a Member of the Board of Directors at the American Society for Nutrition.
Before joining GSK, Dr. van Klinken worked at Pfizer Consumer Healthcare as the Senior Director of Global Medical Affairs for Nutrition. In this role, they led the development of innovative communication strategies, R&D pipelines, and market launches. Jan-Willem also led Pfizer's participation in public-private partnerships and played a key role in medical education, symposia, and research.
Earlier in their career, Dr. van Klinken held positions at PepsiCo as the Director of Nutrition R&D for the cereals brand Quaker and at Unilever as a Lead Clinical Research Physician, Category Nutritionist, and Senior Project Manager in Nutrition R&D.
Dr. van Klinken's work experience also includes being a Pediatrician in training at AMC - Academic Medical Center and a Research Fellow in Pediatric Gastroenterology & Nutrition at the University of Amsterdam.
Throughout their career, Dr. van Klinken has made significant contributions to the field of nutrition and has extensive experience in medical affairs, regulatory strategies, clinical studies, and research.
Jan-Willem van Klinken, MD PhD MS FACN holds a Master of Science (MS) degree in Human Nutrition from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Jan-Willem also earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Medicine from the University of Amsterdam and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in Medicine from the same institution. Additionally, they hold a postgraduate degree of Physician in Pharmaceutical Medicine from Université libre de Bruxelles, specializing in Pharmaceutical Medicine (course PHARMED). Jan-Willem van Klinken completed their high school education at The King's School Chester, obtaining A and O levels.
