Prudence Carter is the Director of the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America at Brown University and holds the title of Sarah and Joseph Jr. Dowling Professor of Sociology. Carter is also serving on the Board of Directors for both the Spencer Foundation and the Nellie Mae Education Foundation. Recently, Carter completed a term as Immediate Past President of the American Sociological Association. Previous roles include Dean and Professor at the Graduate School of Education at UC Berkeley, and various positions at Stanford University, including Jacks Family Professor and Faculty Director of the John W. Gardner Center for Youth & Their Communities. Carter began scholarly contributions as an Associate Professor at Harvard University after completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan. Carter holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Columbia University, a Master of Arts in Sociology and Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a BSc in Applied Mathematics and Economics from Brown University.
