Michael Arellano

Program Director, BUILD LA at BUILD

Michael Arellano has been working in volunteer management for over two years. Michael started at Junior Achievement of Southern California in January 2018 and worked their way up to Volunteer Manager. In this role, they oversaw recruitment and organization for all volunteer experiences throughout Los Angeles County, working with over 4,000 volunteers annually. Michael also collaborated with JA's corporate sponsors to plan and organize volunteer experiences.

In July 2020, Michael left JA to take on a new challenge as Program Director at BUILD LA. In this role, they are responsible for the BUILD Program, which helps young people in underserved communities get the skills and experience they need to succeed in college and career. Michael has already made a big impact in their short time at BUILD, developing and implementing a volunteer recruitment, stewardship, and recognition plan with the goal of retaining and increasing the number of active volunteers. Michael has also used survey answers from teachers and volunteers to create a plan and procedures to pivot programs into the virtual setting as a response to the COVID-19 crisis.

Michael Arellano's educational career began with a Bachelor's Degree in Communication: Journalism from California State University, Fullerton. After graduation, Mr. Arellano began their professional career as a journalist.

They are on a team with Elia Hernandez - Development & Operations Manager, Kim Vinh - Program Director, Pen, and Chelsey Brown - Program Director, Oak. Michael Arellano reports to Ryan Oliver, Regional Executive Director, Bay Area & LA.
