Amira Adawe

2020 Bush Fellow at Bush Foundation

Amira Adawe, MPH, serves as an instructor at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, teaching Environmental Justice, Policy and Practice. As a 2020 Bush Fellow and founder of The Beautywell Project, Amira has dedicated efforts towards combating skin-lightening practices and chemical exposures within Refugee and Immigrant communities. Amira also teaches toxic hazard awareness courses and conducts assessments at the University of Minnesota Division of Environmental Health Science. Additional roles include founding member of the Somali, Latino, and Hmong Partnership for Health and Wellness, and manager for the Minnesota Children's Cabinet under Governor Mark Dayton. Amira's extensive legislative experience includes serving as a legislative liaison for the Minnesota Department of Health and founding chair of the Somali Health Coalition's Health Education Sub-Committee. Educational credentials include an Executive Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership from Harvard Kennedy School and a Master of Public Health from the University of Minnesota.
