James Houghton

Principal Geotechnical Engineer at Canal & River Trust

James Houghton has a diverse work experience in the field of geotechnical engineering. James started their career in 2002 at Isle of Wight Council, where they worked as a Geotechnical Engineer before progressing to the role of Senior Geotechnical Engineer. During this time, they focused on the prediction, stabilization, rehabilitation, and management of ground movement, as well as the expansion of geotechnical monitoring networks and analysis of geotechnical data.

In 2008, James joined Golder Associates as an Engineering Geologist, where they worked on various projects in Western Australia and Papua New Guinea. James'sresponsibilities included designing and executing geotechnical site investigations, slope stability analysis, foundation design, and writing reports and proposals for new projects.

James then moved to Newcrest Mining Limited in 2012, initially as a Senior Geotechnical Engineer and later as the Geotechnical Superintendent on secondment. In this role, they managed drilling programs, undertook stability analyses, and developed geotechnical monitoring systems for open pit mines, stockpiles, and waste dumps.

In 2013, James joined Atkins as a Senior Engineering Geologist, where they worked on a wide range of geotechnical and geological studies for the highways, rail, and nuclear sectors. James'sresponsibilities included desk studies, ground investigation reports, construction supervision, slope stability assessments, geotechnical design, and tender preparation.

Most recently, James joined Canal & River Trust in 2021 as a Senior Geotechnical Engineer and was promoted to the role of Principal Geotechnical Engineer in 2022.

James Houghton completed a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Geology from Durham University, which they attended from 1996 to 1999. After that, they pursued a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Mining Geology from Camborne School of Mines, completing it in the year 2001.

In addition to their formal education, James has obtained various certifications over the years. In 2015, they received the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Academically Qualified Person certification from CONSTRUCTION SKILLS CERTIFICATION SCHEME LIMITED. James also completed the Basic Offshore Safety Induction & Emergency Training (BOSIET) and the Compressed Air Emergency Breathing System Initial Deployment Training (CA EBS) from OPITO in the same year.

In 2017, James obtained the UK Register of Ground Engineering Professionals (RoGEP) certification from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Most recently, in 2023, they obtained the Institute of Asset Management Certificate from The Institute of Asset Management.

James is also a member of professional societies. James holds the Chartered Geologist (CGeol) designation from the Geological Society of London and is recognized as a European Geologist (EurGeol) by the European Federation of Geologists. Specific dates for when these designations were obtained were not provided.
