Silke Gillessen has extensive work experience in the field of oncology and hematology. Silke currently holds the positions of Medical and Scientific Director of the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland and Head of the Department of Medical Oncology at Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale (EOC) since 2020. In addition, they are a Full Professor at the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences at USI Università della Svizzera italiana since the same year.
Prior to these roles, Silke Gillessen worked at The University of Manchester and The Christie NHS Foundation Trust as Chair Systemic Treatment Research GU Cancers, Professor in the Division of Cancer Sciences, and Honorary Consultant from 2018-2019. Silke also served as Head of Clinical Trial Unit Oncology/Hematology and Senior Consultant at Kantonsspital St.Gallen from 2008-2018 and as a Consultant from 2001-2007.
Other positions in their career include a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Adult Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute from 1998-2001, and various internships in oncology and hematology at Kantonsspital St.Gallen, University Hospital Basel, St. Claraspital AG, and as a Research Associate at Roche.
Silke Gillessen's education history includes various degrees and professorships in different institutions. Silke'seducation journey began at the University of Basel, where they obtained a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1992. Silke then pursued further specialization by completing a degree in Internal Medicine at FMH in 1997. In 2002, they obtained another degree, this time in Medical Oncology, also from FMH. Moving forward, Silke Gillessen continued their academic pursuits at the University of Bern, where they completed their PD - Venia docendi degree in 2006. Following this, they achieved a Titular Professorship at the University of Bern in 2011. Later on, in 2019, they were granted an Honorary Professorship at The University of Manchester. Silke'seducational journey culminated in a Full Professorship at USI Università della Svizzera italiana, which they currently hold since an unspecified start year and until 2020.
