Mike Coffin started their work experience in 2008 as a Dinghy Sailing Instructor at Sunsail. In 2009, they held intern positions at Red Gate Software as a Sales Analyst Intern, at bp as a Geologist Intern, and at Europe Economics as a Research Intern. From 2009 to 2019, they worked at bp in various roles, including Exploration Geologist, Production Geologist, Geologist - Exploration & Appraisal, Project Lead - Unconventional Exploration, and Secretary - Exploration Technical Committee. At Carbon Tracker since 2019, they started as an Analyst, then became a Senior Analyst, and is currently serving as the Head of Oil, Gas, and Mining, leading the research team and providing thought leadership on the energy transition primarily for an investment audience.

Mike Coffin's education history includes several degrees and certifications. In 1999, they attended Winchester College and completed their A Levels, focusing on subjects such as Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and French.

From 2004 to 2007, Coffin attended the University of Cambridge, where they earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Natural Sciences with a specialization in Geological Sciences. Mike then continued their education at the University of Cambridge from 2007 to 2008, obtaining a Master of Science (MSci) degree in Geological and Earth Sciences.

In terms of additional certifications, Coffin became a Chartered Geologist (CGeol) in September 2015 through the Geological Society of London. Mike also passed the CFA Exam Level 1 in February 2021, certified by the CFA Institute.
