Ricardo Johnson

EVP, Enterprise Strategy & Healthworx at CareFirst

Ricardo R. Johnson is the Executive Vice President for Enterprise Strategy and Emerging Businesses, a division focused on driving alignment in and around CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield’s (CareFirst’s) strategy and executing on new opportunities to expand lines of business and investments. Additionally, he leads Healthworx, the innovation and investment arm of CareFirst.

Ricardo leads a dynamic team that creates, partners with and invests in companies that improve healthcare quality, accessibility, affordability, and equity, all in pursuit of a unified vision for CareFirst’s efforts to transform healthcare. Before building the Healthworx team, Ricardo worked as the Special Assistant to the CEO of CareFirst, where he was the senior adviser on strategic and operational functions within CareFirst. Prior to that, he practiced healthcare law for several years and served as the company's Associate General Counsel.

Ricardo has a deep understanding of the healthcare industry—from product development and operations to strategy and business growth. In his work as Special Assistant to the CEO that he laid the groundwork for what would become Healthworx, focusing on the intersection of healthcare and innovation.

Ricardo holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Maryland and an undergraduate degree from La Salle University. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees for The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore and previously served on the Board of Directors of La Salle University, Mother Seton Academy and Central Scholarship.
