Rhett then attended the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and obtained their Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from 1993 to 1997. Subsequently, Cummings joined the University of Maryland School of Medicine for the Internal Medicine Residency Program, which they completed from 1997 to 2000. Finally, they undertook a Fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 2000 to 2004.
