Chief Of Cardiology

Matthew Schumaecker, MD, MBA, MIT, serves as the Medical Director of Cardiovascular Informatics and Nuclear Cardiology at Carilion Clinic since November 2012. Concurrently, Matthew is an Associate Professor of Medicine in Cardiology at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute, a position held since September 2012, following an earlier role as Assistant Professor in the same department. Previous experience includes being a Cardiologist and Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Lehigh Valley Health Network from July 2007 to July 2012, a Fellow in Cardiovascular Diseases at UPMC from 2004 to 2007, and a Hospitalist at Renown Health from 2003 to 2004. Beginning medical training at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Matthew completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine from 2000 to 2003. Educational credentials include an MD from McGill University, an MBA from Lehigh University, a Master of Information Technology from Virginia Tech, and a Graduate Certificate in Health Information Technology from Virginia Tech. Additionally, undergraduate studies were completed at Northwestern University, resulting in dual Bachelors degrees in Biology and Music.
