Anne Hergarden

Senior Scientist at Carmot Therapeutics

Anne Hergarden has held a variety of positions in the scientific field over the past 20 years. In 2000, they began their career as a Research Associate at The Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation (GNF), where they cloned and characterized three novel thermoreceptors, resulting in two publications in Cell and one in Science. Anne also identified genes specific to nociceptive neurons using cDNA microarrays and conducted a mouse ENU mutagenesis screen to identify genes involved in nociception. In 2002, they became a Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow at Caltech, where they identified a neuronal circuit that regulates hunger independent of metabolism in Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies), resulting in a publication in PNAS. From 2015 to 2020, they were a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of California, Davis, where they investigated signaling properties of neuropsychiatric drugs and GPCR pharmacology, and led protein interaction studies resulting in a first author publication in Neuron and co-authorship on two additional peer-reviewed publications. Since 2020, they have been a Senior Scientist and Scientist II at Carmot Therapeutics, Inc., where they are co-leading a cross-functional team in the identification of lead drug candidates for GPCR target. Anne also designs, executes, and delegates cell-based cell signaling assays to support compound profiling and develops and executes assays to measure in vitro properties and MOA of lead candidates and tool compounds. Additionally, they coordinate experiments, analyzes, and authors in vitro properties IND report.

Anne Hergarden obtained a B.S. in Zoology with Honors and a Minor in Chemistry from The University of Texas at Austin in 1997. Anne then completed coursework to qualify for a B.A. in German Studies from Bayerische Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg from 1998 to 1999. In 2002, they earned their Ph.D. in Biology from Caltech. In 2017, they obtained certifications from the American Association for Cell Biology and Keck Graduate Institute for the ASCB-KGI Biotech Course, the University of California, Davis - Graduate School of Management for the UC Davis Entrepreneurship Academy, and the UC Davis Proteomics Core for the Bioinformatics Course.
