Billy Atwell

Billy Atwell has extensive work experience in communications and media relations within the Catholic Church. Billy is currently serving as the Executive Director of the Arlington Catholic Herald since April 2021. Prior to that, they worked as the Chief Communications Officer for the Catholic Diocese of Arlington from July 2017. In this role, they served as the diocesan spokesperson and oversaw various communications initiatives.

Before joining the Catholic Diocese of Arlington, Atwell was the Director of Communications for the Diocese of Raleigh from April 2014 to July 2017. Billy was responsible for communication efforts within the diocese, including media relations, managing the diocesan website, and publishing a magazine.

Atwell also held the position of Director of Communications for the Diocese of Venice in Florida from April 2011 to April 2014. In this role, they served as the spokesperson for the bishop and oversaw communications for a ten-county region.

Additionally, Atwell has contributed to various Catholic media organizations, including Catholic Online and the Manhattan Declaration, where they worked as a blogger. Billy also served as a Coordinator for the Colson Center at Breakpoint, providing support to partnering organizations in communications and project management.

Atwell began their career as an intern at Prison Fellowship Ministries, where they worked as an Assistant to the Public Policy Director. Billy represented the director at meetings and conferences and conducted research on relevant legislation.

Billy Atwell attended Cardinal Gibbons High School from 1999 to 2004, where they obtained their high school diploma. Following this, they attended East Carolina University from 2004 to 2008, where they earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy.
