Senior SQL Server Database Administrator – Advisory Services

Purpose

As part of the Advisory Services organization, the role of the Senior SQL Server Database Administrator will be responsible for the implementation, configuration, maintenance, and performance of critical SQL Server RDBMS systems, to ensure the availability and consistent performance to our clients. This is a “hands-on” position requiring solid technical skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and sustainment of multiple clients on various SQL Server versions ensuring operational readiness (security, health, and performance) on clients with SQL Server on premise and/or within Azure or AWS. Must be capable of working independently and collaboratively.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Continuous engagement and communications with the assigned client base in a consultative approach.
  • Responsible for day-to-day activities regarding the upkeep and availability of all database servers in the environment including lower environments
  • Serve as SME (subject matter expert) for Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and other database technologies.
  • Responsible for database backup and restore functions including scheduled tests of DR availability, including knowledge of MS SQL restoration and availability technologies such as Clustering, Replication and especially Always-On.
  • Performance tuning of database systems, assist developers with query tuning and enforcing SQL coding standards.
  • Install, upgrade, and manage database applications.
  • Build and report on SQL environment performance and availability metrics and takes appropriate actions to implement best practices and optimize performance.
  • Recommend and implement emerging database technologies.
  • Create automation for repeating database
  • Be available for on-call
  • Consult on additional Assist in the technical analysis and design for current and future projects.
  • Advise sales resources on current and future opportunity possibilities within their assigned client base.
  • Build a knowledge base, document, and develop standard operation procedures

for each customer’s SQL Server Architecture.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 7 years of Database Administration (DBA)
  • Strong and demonstrable experience as DBA in large-scale MS SQL environments.
  • Experience with MS Azure, AWS, and other cloud technologies.
  • Configure and maintain database servers and processes, including monitoring of system health, performance management, security, installations, upgrades, patches, backup, recovery, space management, proactive and reactive performance analysis, and capacity planning. Develop back-up and recovery procedures, including testing back-ups and data
  • Proven experience with database replication techniques, complexities, automation, monitoring, and high-availability strategies--use of 3rd party solutions in these techniques is encouraged. Provide systems architecture guidance in creating high availability systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to get to the route of an issue quickly
  • Develop and establish policies and procedures related to data security and integrity; monitor and limit database access as needed.
  • Ensure all database servers are managed to Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO).
  • Experience in writing automation scripts, building application dashboards for proactive monitoring using PowerShell scripting or similar technologies, ability to debug and optimize code and automate routine tasks.
  • Excels in a collaborative environment and is willing to own all database-related activities.

  • Assist the company in developing a data driven business culture, delivery of timely business metrics data.
  • Previous experience working with Systems Admins in the areas of storage, backups, and database operations processes preferred.
