Senior Principal Software Engineer at Cerence

Alberto Pettarin has a diverse work experience in various roles and positions. Alberto is currently a Principal Software Engineer in the Text-To-Speech R&D team at Cerence Inc., a spin-off company of Nuance Communications that specializes in the Automotive industry. In this role, their responsibilities include designing, implementing, and testing new products and code components, maintaining existing text to speech core products, and managing and facilitating the processes of the TTS Engineering team.

Prior to their current position, Alberto worked as a Principal Software Engineer at Nuance Communications, where they had similar responsibilities in the Text-To-Speech R&D team. Alberto also served as a Senior Software Engineer at the same company, contributing to the design, implementation, and testing of new code components and maintaining existing text to speech core products.

Before joining Nuance Communications, Alberto worked as a Freelance Developer, specializing in speech, NLP, and high-performance algorithms. Alberto also developed optimization MILP kernels for industrial packing applications.

Alberto is the (Founder, CEO &) Head of Research at ReadBeyond, a startup that developed software for producing, distributing, and enjoying digital contents, specifically Audio-eBooks. Alberto led the development of two major projects at ReadBeyond.

Prior to their entrepreneurial ventures, Alberto worked as a Research Collaborator at the Department of Information Engineering at the University of Padova, where they focused on data mining research projects. Alberto later transitioned to supervising student projects and theses involving mobile platforms and eBooks.

Alberto also founded Smuuks, a company that offered advanced digital publishing services, which was later acquired by ReadBeyond.

In terms of their academic experience, Alberto was a Visiting Research Scholar at Brown University, where they studied information spreading and served as a Head Teaching Assistant for an information retrieval and web search course. Alberto also worked as a Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant at the University of Padova.

Alberto Pettarin earned a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Information Engineering from the University of Padova in 2006. Alberto then pursued a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Computer Engineering at the same institution from 2006 to 2008. Alberto furthered their education by obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Information Engineering from the University of Padova, which they completed in 2011.
