Lucky Jain, MD, MBA, became the Chief Academic Officer for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in 2017. He also serves as George W. Brumley Jr. Professor, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Emory School of Medicine and Executive Director of the Emory + Children’s Pediatric Institute.
Dr. Jain has a long history with Children’s and Emory. He began working as a neonatologist at Egleston 24 years ago. He joined Emory in 1994 as associate professor and was promoted to professor in 2001. In 2006, he was appointed Medical Director of Emory-Children’s Center and Executive Vice-Chair of the Department of Pediatrics. He served as interim Chair of the Department of Pediatrics from July 2015 to October 2017.
Dr. Jain received his medical degree and completed his residency at the University of Rajasthan in Jaipur, India. From there, he was awarded a Rotary International Award for advanced training in pediatrics and neonatology in 1985, and he credits that as the beginning of his career in pediatrics.
When Dr. Jain joined Children’s at Egleston Hospital, he had a research lab focused on determining how fetal lungs clear fluid and prevent breathing difficulties after birth. In addition to this research and his clinical work, he also was involved with the neonatology training program.
Today, Dr. Jain is a specialist in respiratory disorders of the newborn. His research still focuses on the physiology of lung sodium and fluid transport and on strategies to enhance lung fluid clearance. His lab is credited with elucidation of the role steroids play in fetal lung fluid clearance and the resulting multicenter trial of antenatal steroid treatment in late preterm gestations.
As Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Jain is responsible for the Children’s research and teaching portfolio. He also leads the Emory partnership and the System’s relationships with Georgia Tech and other academic partners. Dr. Jain serves on the Physician Wellness Committee; he is passionate about extending the focus on wellness to all physicians at Children’s—and he leads by example. Dr. Jain stays active and especially enjoys tennis, yoga and meditation.
Dr. Jain is married to Shabnam Jain, who is an emergency physician at Children’s and Medical Director of Clinical Effectiveness for the System.
