Makeda James has a diverse work experience spanning several companies and roles. In 2021, they worked as a Project Director at CAI (Cicatelli Associates Inc). Prior to that, from 2006 to 2022, Makeda served as the POW'R Against Tobacco Reality Check Youth Advocacy Program Coordinator at the American Lung Association of the Northeast. In this role, they used strategic planning and project management skills to meet critical deadlines and maintain high-quality standards. Makeda also demonstrated strong communication and leadership skills by networking with key executives and delivering presentations and trainings on tobacco policy implementation. From 2012 to 2015, Makeda was the STOP ACT Grant Coordinator at the City of Mount Vernon Youth Bureau, where they focused on underage drinking prevention. Additionally, they worked as an Associate/Key holder at Little missmatched in 2012 and as a Streetwise Youth Manager at The Children's Village from 2010 to 2011.

Makeda James completed their Bachelor's degree in Biology/Biological Sciences at Howard University from 1999 to 2003. Makeda then pursued a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Maternal and Child Health at New York Medical College from 2006 to 2009.
