Sonam Vashi has a diverse work experience in the journalism field. Sonam is currently the Director of Network Success at City Bureau, where they oversee the Documenters Network. Previously, they co-founded Canopy Atlanta, a news organization dedicated to community journalism. Sonam also served as a John S. Knight Community Impact Fellow at Stanford University, working on solutions for addressing the neglect of communities of color in the journalism industry.
Sonam has extensive freelance experience, having written for prestigious publications such as The New York Times, Atlanta magazine, Washington Post, and National Geographic. Sonam has also worked as a Copy Editor at Atlanta Magazine and contributed as a housing reporter for Saporta Report. Earlier in their career, they held roles at CNN, where they worked as a Reporter for CNN Investigations and an Associate Data Producer. Sonam was also a part of the research team at The Row, CNN's editorial gatekeeper.
Additionally, Sonam has teaching experience as a Teaching Assistant and Researcher at Emory University, focusing on the 1906 Atlanta Massacre. Sonam began their career as a Contributing Writer at Creative Loafing and an Education Reporting Intern at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Throughout their career, Sonam has demonstrated a passion for investigative journalism, criminal justice, immigration, and community storytelling.
Sonam Vashi attended Norcross High School from 2007 to 2011. After completing high school, they pursued their Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Journalism at Emory University from 2011 to 2015.
