The town of Galena sprang to life in the spring of 1876 when Galena (the natural mineral form of lead sulfite) was discovered in southeast Kansas. Incorporated in 1877, Galena is the oldest mining town in Kansas and currently home to nearly 3,000 residents. Galena is located in Cherokee County at the foothills of the Ozark Mountains and is governed by Mayor Dale Oglesby and seven city council members. City Clerk Flora (Renee) Charles oversees administrative duties and city employees.

Covering approximately 5 square miles, the city of Galena has developed an international reputation among Route 66 fans as one of the 'must-see' stops along the historic route and has fostered strong and steady growth for nearly a decade as a result of strong leadership and a pro-growth city government. Galena continues to build on its success with projects like Phase II of the downtown revitalization & streetscape project and the addition of a new 40-bed skilled nursing unit near the city-owned Premier Surgical Institute inpatient and outpatient hospital. To create and encourage new development and redevelopment throughout the city, work is being done to increase and diversify the city’s economy and create jobs through business attraction, retention and expansion initiatives.
