Carl R. Buchanon

Carl R. Buchanon, Sr. has extensive experience in fire service and athletics, currently serving as Fire Chief for the City of South Bend since April 2020. Buchanon's fire service career began as a firefighter in November 1986, progressing to Battalion Chief from May 2007 to March 2020, where responsibilities included incident command, personnel management, and enforcement of policies. Additionally, Buchanon held positions at the University of Notre Dame as a Warehouse Associate and Driver from July 1995 to March 2020, and coached high school track at Clay High School and John Adams High School from February 1991 to June 2004 and February 1984 to June 1990, respectively. Buchanon holds an Associate's degree in Data Processing, having studied at Hutchinson Community College and Western Michigan University.
