Jim Bonner has a diverse and extensive work experience spanning several decades. Jim started their career as a Fisheries Technician at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in 1976. Jim then worked as a Research Assistant and later became an Instructor at Clarkson University from 1977 to 1983. Following this, they joined the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a part of the Computer Science Corp team from 1983 to 1985. Jim then worked as a Visiting Assistant Professor at SUNY Plattsburgh in the Department of Environmental Sciences in 1985.
In 1986, they began their tenure at Texas A&M University, starting as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and eventually becoming an Associate Professor in 1992. Jim was promoted to a full Professor position in the Department of Civil Engineering in 2005. During their time at Texas A&M University, they also served as the Executive Director of the Conrad Blucher Institute for Surveying and Science, an endowed research institute, from 1997 to 2005.
In 1994, Jim became the Director of the Shoreline Environmental Research Facility, a position they held until 2013. In 2007, they established their own company called Research, Applied Technology, Education and Services Inc., where they served as the Founder and CEO.
That same year, they also joined The Beacon Institute at Clarkson University as the Chief Research Officer and a Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering department. In addition, they served as the Director of the Center for the Environment from 2007 to 2009 and as a Shipley Fellow from 2009 to 2015.
Jim's career also included a role as the Director of Research at the Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries, another division of Clarkson University, from 2008 to 2015.
