Phil Coomes

Phil Coomes is an experienced finance professional currently serving as Controller at Breakthrough Energy since July 2021, overseeing financial accounting, tax, operations, systems, controls, reporting, and compliance with a focus on achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Previously, Phil held various positions in accounting, including Senior Technical Accounting Manager at PayScale, Inc., where expertise in software and services revenue recognition was demonstrated, and Technical Accounting Manager at Expeditors, managing internal audits. Phil's earlier career includes a role as Budget Analyst Supervisor for the US Army, where budget development and oversight were key responsibilities, and experience at Western Washington University managing educational benefits for Veterans. Phil has an MBA in Finance and Entrepreneurship from the University of Washington, a BA in Economics from Western Washington University, and is currently pursuing a Certificate of Accountancy at UC Berkeley Extension. Phil's military background includes service as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps.
