Karen Trant has extensive work experience in the regulatory sector, specifically in the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU). Karen started their career in 2006 as a Policy Analyst and later became a Manager of Safety Regulation. In 2016, they joined the CRU again as a Senior Manager and Solicitor in the Energy Networks division. Karen then progressed to become the Director of Energy Networks and Water Regulation in 2018. In 2019, they took on the role of Director of Energy Networks and Legal, before finally assuming their current position as the Director of Customer Policy & Protection and Legal in January 2022. Prior to their time at the CRU, Karen worked as a Trainee Solicitor at Arthur Cox from 2012 to 2014.

Karen Trant attended Queen's University Belfast from 1995 to 1998, where they obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree. Their field of study during this time was law.
