Dr. Michael Millar, DMA, ACC has a diverse work experience spanning various sectors. From 2004 to present, they have been involved with California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, initially as a Lecturer in the Music Department and now as Faculty Emeritus in Music Industry Studies. Michael has taught a wide range of courses, including Nonprofit Music, Careers in Music, and Introduction to Music, among others. Additionally, they served as the Director of the Center for Community Engagement from 2013 to 2018, overseeing its operations, budget, and fundraising.
Prior to their role at the university, Dr. Millar worked as an Independent Consultant starting in 2002. As a Certified Professional Coach & Consultant, they leveraged their 30+ years of experience in the creative industries, higher education, management, leadership, and community service to assist clients in exploring personal and professional possibilities.
Outside of their academic and consultancy work, Dr. Millar has been actively involved in the City of Santa Clarita. Since 2009, they have served as an Arts Commissioner, assuming various leadership roles, including Chair of the Arts Commission. Michael has also been a member of the Arts Advisory Committee and has supported community arts stakeholders as a coach and consultant.
In addition, Dr. Millar has an extensive background as a bass trombone artist, having performed with notable musicians and ensembles such as Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Michael has also been affiliated with Conn-Selmer, Inc. as an Education & Trombone Artist/Clinician.
Throughout their career, Dr. Millar has held positions with organizations such as the Arts Council of Kern as Executive Director, Southwest Chamber Music as Development Director/Grant Writing Consultant, Santa Clarita Symphony as Executive Director, and University of Colorado at Boulder as Interim Director of the Entrepreneurship Center for Music.

Michael obtained a Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) degree in Performance and Arts Administration from the Drucker School of Management, where they studied from 1996 to 1999. Prior to that, they completed a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Music Performance from California State University, Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.) in Music Performance from the University of Colorado Boulder.
In addition to their musical education, Michael has also acquired several certifications. Michael is an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) from the International Coaching Federation, a Certified Associate in Connective Leadership and Achieving Styles Assessments from the Connective Leadership Institute, and a Certified Facilitator in Peter F.
