Head of Software at Control Bionics

Tom Allen is an experienced consultant CTO and engineering leader. Tom specializes in working with engineering teams on mechatronic products that combine software, electronics, and hardware. Tom has worked as a consultant at Dr Tom's since July 2021, where they assist clients with technology strategy, engineering skills mix, and system and software architecture. Tom also serves as the head of software at Control Bionics since March 2022, where they focus on creating devices that enhance the interaction between people with disabilities and technology. Additionally, Tom co-founded Cubescape in May 2014, where they developed fully-automated escape rooms, and served as the director of software at Ideas at Sea from July to October 2022. Tom also has experience as the head of engineering and engineering manager at Cooltrax, a leading supplier of IoT solutions for managing the cold chain. Tom has served as a partner at Social Venture Partners Melbourne since March 2021, providing strategic advice, IT experience, and practical engineering efforts. Tom also sat on the board of Kids Like Us Australia Limited starting in November 2021 until December 2022. Prior to these roles, Tom worked as a product architect at Telstra, a Python developer and data scientist at an undisclosed internet company, and held various roles at Planet Innovation, including software team lead, consultant engineer & project manager, and senior software engineer. Tom'sexpertise spans a range of industries and technologies, including product development, software architecture, and strategic consulting.

Tom Allen completed their education at the University of Sydney. From 2002 to 2006, they obtained a B.E./B.Sc. degree in Mechatronic Engineering and Physics. Later, from 2007 to 2010, they pursued a Ph.D. in Robotics at the same university. In addition to their formal education, Tom has also obtained several certifications, including "Managing Project Risks and Changes," "Budgeting and Scheduling Projects," and "Initiating and Planning Projects" from Coursera Course Certificates in February and March of 2016.
