Yongmei Li

Director of Institutional Assessment & Effectiveness at Converse College

In her current role, Dr. Li leads and supports all institutional assessment and accreditation activities at Converse. She has conducted a number of workshops and presentations on student learning outcomes assessment at the national, regional, state, and local levels, including the annual conferences organized by the Association for Institutional Research and the Southern Association on Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). She also serves as a SACSCOC institutional effectiveness peer evaluator. Dr. Li also provides support for the Converse International School. As well, she teaches English as a Second Language courses at Converse.

Dr. Li has served in a variety of higher education positions prior to coming to Converse. As a staff member, she has at least seven years of combined experience in institutional research and strategic planning and assessment for academic programs, academic and student support units, and administrative units. As well, Dr. Li has previously served as a faculty member for a number of years. Her research interests focus on English language learners (ELLs). In particular, she is interested in the ELLs’ language and literacy development, and how early adolescent ELLs’ relationships with peers, parents, and teachers affect their school engagement and academic achievement. She has published several peer-reviewed articles and a book chapter as well as presented at professional conferences. Dr. Li taught courses in literacy education and first-year experience at the college level. In addition, she has also taught English to various grades in K-12 and to working professionals.

Dr. Li graduated with distinction in English from the Ocean University of China. She earned her MEd in language and literacy education from Texas Tech University. She received her MA in educational psychology, measurement, and evaluation and her PhD in literacy education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition, during her studies at UNC-Chapel Hill, she also received a graduate certificate in survey methodology and a formal concentration in quantitative psychology, and she completed coursework for NC reading specialist licensure.
