Cathy McNeil Stein has a diverse work experience. Cathy McNeil began their career as an Associate Attorney at Jenner & Block in 1986, specializing in complex commercial litigation. In 1988, they moved to McDermott Will & Emery and became a Capital Partner, handling product liability cases for pharmaceutical companies, manufacturers, and other clients. Cathy McNeil remained with McDermott Will & Emery until 2004.

After leaving McDermott Will & Emery, Cathy joined Novus Law LLC in 2013 as the Director of Client Services. Cathy McNeil led client engagement teams and oversaw service delivery for clients and their law firms. Cathy McNeil also played a key role in improving the firm's service delivery processes and quality management systems.

In addition to their roles in the legal field, Cathy also served as an Adjunct Professor at North Central College from 2013 to 2015, and at Trinity Christian College in 2012.

Most recently, Cathy worked at the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. Cathy McNeil served as the Chief of the Civil Actions Bureau and was responsible for managing civil litigation cases. Prior to that, they served as a Supervisor in the Conflicts Counsel Unit, providing legal advice and defending the Cook County Sheriff's Merit Board in civil litigation.
