Neil Birkett

Associate Director, CMC Process Development at Crescendo Biologics

Neil Birkett has worked in a variety of roles over the past two decades. In 1999, they worked as a Summer Student at Unilever, where they developed a method to model the rheology of ice cream matrix in its frozen state, developed novel aeration methods, and developed a department website. In 2007, they worked as a Postdoc at the University of Cambridge. From 2008-2017, they worked at MedImmune as a Scientist I, R&D Manager, and Research Scientist, where they were responsible for purification process development for clinical manufacturing of antibody-based therapeutics, operational management of a team producing 100+ samples per week, and optimising expression and purification methods. Since 2017, they have worked at Crescendo Biologics Limited as an Associate Director, CMC Process Development, Health & Safety Officer, and Senior Scientist | Process Development Lead (DSP). In this role, they are the company lead for the design and optimisation of downstream purification processes for novel Humabody therapeutics across multiple projects, and is responsible for managing the DSP transfer into and ongoing oversight of external manufacturing activities to support pre-clinical studies and clinical trials. Neil is also the lead purification specialist for internal non-affinity-based purification activities, both high-throughput and larger scale.

Neil Birkett obtained their PhD in Biophysics from the University of Cambridge in 2007. Neil had previously obtained a BA and MSci in Natural Sciences from the same university in 2003.
