Associate Principal, Innovation Lab Lead at Crossboundary

Tombo Banda is an associate principal and innovation lab lead at Crossboundary. Tombo was previously an engagement manager at McKinsey & Company from October 2016 to February 2021. Prior to that, they were a mechanical engineer at Prime Engineering Malawi from September 2008 to September 2015, where they were responsible for the HVAC, currency processing machinery, hydraulic loading platforms for gold bullion, lifts, and façade cleaning equipment. Tombo also worked on the HVAC, rain water harvesting system, and fire mist sprinkler system at the Joint Border posts of Sèmè (Nigeria/Benin), Hillacondji-Sanveecondji (Benin/Togo), Noépé (Togo/Ghana), Elubo-Noé (Ghana/Côte d’Ivoire), and Kourémalé (Guinea/Mali). In addition, they have experience with mango production, having selected all plant and machinery, analyzed energy requirements and energy provision, designed and tendered for a 400kW solar power sytem and 250kW biogas CHP plant, installed and commissioned all plant and machinery, designed the engineering block, set up the workshop and spares inventory, formulated the budget for the Engineering department, recruited and managed mechanical, electrical, refrigeration and boiler technicians, and formulated and managed the maintenance program for all plant and machinery.

Tombo Banda has a Master of Philosophy in Engineering for Sustainable Development from the University of Cambridge, a Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London, and certification from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in CEng MIMechE. Tombo attended St Andrews International High School.
