Senior Scientist/Research Engineer, CyberPoint Labs at Cyberpoint

Riva Borbely has worked in the field of computer network defense and operations since 2005. From 2005 to 2010, they were a Lead Research Engineer at BAE Systems - AIT, where they performed research, analysis, and software development in Java, C/C++, Perl, and Matlab on both Windows and Linux operating systems. Her research areas included anomaly detection, classification, distributed systems, code analysis, and constraint solving. From 2010 to present, they have been a Senior Scientist/Research Engineer at CyberPoint International, where they have conducted research and software development in detection of malware and network incidents. This has included developing an Android app that detects malware and a Hadoop implementation of machine learning algorithms. Riva was also a key player (and eventually Principal Investigator) on an adversarial challenge team for the DARPA STAC Program, where they designed, implemented, and exploited Java programs containing a variety of algorithmic complexity and side channel vulnerabilities. Additionally, they created a C# library for seamlessly reading from an offline Windows registry, and reverse engineered user settings in the Windows (XP, Vista, and 7) registry and file system.

Riva Borbely's education history includes attending Cleveland Heights High School, followed by obtaining a BA in Mathematics from Grinnell College. Riva then earned a Master of Science (MS) in Computer Science from Cornell University, and finally a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Cornell University. In addition to their formal education, Riva Borbely has obtained several certifications, including a CompTIA Security+ in December 2020, a NVIDIA DLI Certificate in March 2022, an edX Honor Code Certificate for Scalable Machine Learning in August 2015, a Functional Programming Principles in Scala from Coursera in July 2014, a Cryptography I from Coursera in February 2014, a Computing for Data Analysis from Coursera in January 2013, and a Web Intelligence and Big Data from Coursera in November 2012.
