Angel Mak

Angel Mak has a diverse work experience in the field of bioinformatics and genetic research. They are currently working as a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist at CytomX Therapeutics since January 2022. Prior to this, Angel worked at the University of California, San Francisco for several years. At UCSF, they held the position of Director of Genetic Research in the Asthma Collaboratory, Esteban Burchard Lab from August 2015 to December 2021. In this role, Angel led a team in a large-scale whole genome sequencing project, resulting in multiple publications and important insights into asthma research. They also supervised teams and managed federal-funded genetics projects. Before their role as Director, Angel worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Pui-Yan Kwok Lab from April 2011 to July 2015. During this time, they performed quality control and data analysis on NGS data and made significant contributions to the understanding of various diseases. They also led analyses to detect structural variations in human samples using genome mapping technology.

Angel Mak began their education at The University of Hong Kong, where they earned a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Biochemistry from 2000 to 2003. They then pursued a higher degree in the same field at the same university, obtaining a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Bioinformatics from 2003 to 2005. Continuing their academic journey, Angel completed their education at The University of Hong Kong with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Bioinformatics and Developmental Biology from 2006 to 2010.

In addition to their formal education, Angel Mak has also obtained several certifications. They completed the course "AWS Cloud Technical Essentials" at Amazon Web Services (AWS) in February 2022. They also completed the course "Publishing Visualizations in R with Shiny and flexdashboard" at The Johns Hopkins University in February 2022. Prior to these, in October 2021, Angel obtained a certification in "Convolutional Neural Networks in TensorFlow" from DeepLearning.AI. In August 2021, they obtained a certification in "Introduction to TensorFlow for Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning" from the same institution. Furthermore, in March 2021, Angel completed the course "Object-Oriented Data Structures in C++" at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and also obtained a certification in "Ordered Data Structures" from the same institution during the same month and year.
