Murali Shanmugavelan

Faculty Fellow Race Caste and Technology at Data & Society Research Institute

Murali Shanmugavelan has a diverse professional background. Murali is currently a Faculty Fellow Race Caste and Technology at the Data & Society Research Institute, starting in 2021. Murali will be a Researcher at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford starting in 2022. Murali was a Board Trustee at Village Service Trust from 2015 to 2020, and a Lead Researcher for the iSocial Fairwork Project from 2020 to 2021. From 2011 to 2015, they were a Partner at MApp-IT Limited, a Programme Convenor for the Masters in Media, Technology and Development at the School of Oriental and African Studies, a Consultant at SHOPS Project, Abt Associates, a Consultant and Director at Maple Consulting Services, and a Consultant at African Development Bank / World Bank for e-Transformation in Africa, ICT and Trade. Finally, from 2011 to 2015, they were a Visiting Fellow at D.NET (Development Research Network).

Murali Shanmugavelan received their Bachelors in Commerce and Business Laws from Madurai Kamaraj University in 1990, followed by a Masters in Political Science from Presidency College in 1994. Murali then completed their MPhil in Politics and Communications from the University of Madras in 1995. In 2000, they earned their MSc in Media and Communications from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Finally, they obtained their PhD in Critical Caste, Communication and Technology Studies, Ethnography of Communication Practices & Caste from SOAS University of London in 2015.
