Drew Nelson

Boone Campus Provost at Des Moines Area Community College

Drew Nelson is currently the Boone Campus Provost at Des Moines Area Community College. Drew previously worked as an adjunct English professor and Dean of Academic Programs at Alvin Community College from September 2007 to July 2016. As a member of the Planning Committee, the Dean shares in strategic planning for college operations, including budgeting and assessment activities relating to the overall mission of the college.

Significant accomplishments during their time as Dean of Academic Programs include successfully guiding the college through its reaffirmation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools/Commission on Colleges, revision of Developmental Education programs, and changing organizational procedures, committee structures, planning and assessment processes to meet requirements of SACS/COC. In addition, they improved dual credit partnerships, with enrollment growing to over 20% of total unduplicated headcount, and improved efficiency of course scheduling in program areas, resulting in reduced part-time salary expenses and fewer cancelled sections.

After completing their Bachelor of Arts at Macalester College, Drew Nelson went on to obtain their Master of Arts in English from Mankato State University. Drew then continued their education at Texas A&M University, where they earned their Doctor of Philosophy in English. Following their graduation from Texas A&M, they took on a position as an Adjunct Instructor at Tomball Community College. Drew has also been the recipient of a Dissertation Grant from the College of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University.

Drew Nelson reports to Robert Denson, President & CEO. Drew Nelson works with Joe Dehart - Newton Campus Provost, Joel Lundstrom - Carroll Campus Provost, and Anthony Paustian - West Des Moines Campus Provost.
