Heather Martinez's work experience includes being the Chief Executive Officer at the Detroit Institute for Children starting in May 2023. Prior to that, they were the Director of Special Education at Wayne-Westland Community Schools from August 2018 to April 2023. Additionally, they have held various roles at Riverview Community Schools, including Special Education Teacher Consultant, Kindergarten Teacher, 4th Grade Teacher, and Special Education Teacher, from August 2003 to August 2018. Heather has also been involved with the Michigan Council for Exceptional Children, serving as President Elect from July 2021 to July 2022 and currently holding the role of President.

Heather Martinez completed their education in the field of Special Education and Teaching. Heather obtained their Teaching certification from Eastern Michigan University. Heather then pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Michigan from 1993 to 1997. Later, they earned a Master of Education degree (MEd) specializing in Special Education and Teaching from Eastern Michigan University in 2017.
