Shumei Yun, MD, MPH, PhD has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of public health and research. Dr. Yun currently serves as the Director of Research at the University of Maryland Capital Region Health, where she manages and conducts clinical research and provides trainings to residents and faculty. Prior to this, she worked as the Principal at Cumulus Health, LLC.

Dr. Yun has also held significant positions at various organizations, including the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) as the Director of the Division of Surveillance and Data Collection, where she managed population-based surveillance systems to monitor substance use, mental health issues, and treatment services. Furthermore, she was the Country Director at Vital Strategies, where she established and managed a country office and supervised technical advisors and staff, working on public health research and program planning.

Dr. Yun has also worked at the University of Missouri-Columbia as an Adjunct Faculty from 2003 to 2018. Shumei held the position of Director of Research and Statistics/State Chronic Disease Epidemiologist at the Missouri Department of Mental Health and Department of Health and Senior Services, conducting research related to non-communicable disease. Moreover, she served as a Manager and Senior Epidemiologist at the Washington State Department of Health, overseeing data collection and analysis for policy decisions regarding maternal and child health.

Her extensive experience also includes roles as a Public Health Epidemiologist/Chief in the Office of Research, Surveillance and Evaluation at the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, where she led the chronic disease and nutritional epidemiology team managing chronic disease and nutrition surveillance systems, epidemiology, and program evaluations. Shumei also worked as a Lecturer/Assistant Professor in preventive medicine at Beijing Medical University.

Throughout her career, Dr. Yun has consistently been involved in program planning, implementation, and evaluation, study design, data collection, analysis, and dissemination, making significant contributions to the public health field.

Dr. Yun has an extensive education history in the fields of nutritional epidemiology, public health, and preventive medicine. Shumei began her educational journey at Beijing Medical University, where they obtained an MD degree in Preventive Medicine and also received ECFMG Permanent Certification. Following this, she pursued a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree at Beijing Medical University from 1993 to 1996.

Continuing her studies, Shumei enrolled at Cornell University and obtained a Ph.D. in Nutritional Epidemiology in 2003, with minors in Economics and Statistics.

In addition to her academic degrees, Dr. Yun has obtained several certifications to enhance her expertise. Shumei acquired ECFMG Permanent Certification from the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates in 2011. Furthermore, she completed the Epic Cosmos Data Science Certificate from Epic and received machine learning certificates from Stanford University in June 2023.

With her educational background, Dr. Yun is well-equipped to make significant contributions in the fields of clinical research, epidemiology, public health, and data science.
