Brian Towles is a member of the technical staff at OpenAI since May 2024 and serves as an adjunct professor at Duke University, teaching graduate-level parallel computer architecture since January 2023. Previously, Towles worked as a principal hardware engineer at Google from September 2019 to May 2024, focusing on TPU architecture and network design. From October 2004 to September 2019, Towles was a research engineer at D. E. Shaw Research, specializing as a computer architect for the Anton family of custom ASICs and handling various aspects of network architecture and performance modeling. Towles earned a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University (1999-2004) and a BCmpE in Computer Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology (1995-1999).
